How To Spot Roof Damage

It can be easy to forget about your roof, as it’s not that often you find yourself up, close and personal with it – but you will soon know if you’ve got a problem with it and, by then, it could prove a costly problem to resolve.

Prevention, as they say, is always better than cure, so make a point of checking your roof at least twice a year so you can stay on top of any potential issues. It’s also a good idea to familiarise yourself with some of the signs of roof damage, so you know when to spring into action if something does go wrong.

Look out for water damage and damp patches upstairs, as this can be a signal that you have a problem with your roof. Check the roof immediately and don’t wait for further signs of damage, as the longer you wait the more expensive it can be to sort out.

Something to really keep an eye out for is sagging in the middle of the roof, as this is indicative of structural damage. If you don’t get this sorted out quickly, your roof could collapse – so be very aware of this and make sure the top of the roof always follows a straight line along the ridge.

Flush out your gutters regularly, as well, and check for debris like bits of tiles or shingles. This suggests that your shingles are deteriorating and this will need to be addressed quickly to prevent a small problem becoming a big one.

And, of course, leaks are a big signal that there’s something wrong with the roof, so head up into the attic occasionally to make sure everything is nice and dry.
